Coverage Detail

What We Cover in Carnegie

Where we travel, what the property mix looks like, and what to tell us when you call.

Carnegie is 1.62 square miles, all land, with Chartiers Creek running through the centre of the borough and Campbells Run joining it here. The creek is also why the place has two halves: the borough was created in 1894 by merging Chartiers and Mansfield, which the water had kept apart. The average elevation is 833 feet. Tell us which side of the creek you are on.

Typical Properties

Dense and old. Main Street is a walkable business district ringed by century-old frame and brick houses, with apartment conversions in between. Porch doors and storm doors are the norm on the residential streets, and the storefronts carry heavier hardware. The commercial core was badly damaged in 2004 and has rebounded since 2014 with restaurants and small businesses.

Access & Dispatch Notes

On-street parking downtown, driveways on the residential blocks, and a creek crossing in the middle of nearly every route. The borough borders Rosslyn Farms to the north, Scott Township to the east, south, and south-west, Collier Township to the west, and Robinson Township to the north-west, so the boundary is tight on every side. Give us the street and the nearest bridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Carnegie FAQs

Quick answers for Carnegie customers.

Who is Carnegie named after?
Andrew Carnegie, who donated one of his libraries to the borough. That gesture is the reason the name was adopted when the borough was formed.
How was the borough formed?
On 1 March 1894, out of the boroughs of Chartiers and Mansfield, which were separated by Chartiers Creek. It later annexed part of Robinson Township, now Rosslyn Heights.
What happened in 1923?
On 25 August 1923 an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 members of the Ku Klux Klan marched on the borough for a so-called Karnegie Day, targeting its heavily Catholic residents. Local residents resisted, a riot followed, and a Klansman was killed.
What happened in 2004?
Hurricane Ivan flooded the borough badly. Much of the commercial section and the borough’s Roman Catholic churches were closed or damaged, and Main Street did not genuinely recover until around 2014.
What runs through the borough?
Chartiers Creek, through the centre, with Campbells Run joining it inside the borough. The average elevation is 833 feet and the borough covers 1.6 square miles, all land.
Which municipalities border Carnegie?
Rosslyn Farms to the north, Scott Township to the east, south, and south-west, Collier Township to the west, and Robinson Township to the north-west. It is about five miles south-west of downtown Pittsburgh.
Do you work on porch and storm doors?
Yes, and they are the commonest door here. A century-old frame house usually has a porch door and a storm door in front of the main entry, each with its own hardware, so tell us how many leaves need keying before we come out.
