New Kensington — New Ken to everyone local — is a Westmoreland County city of about 4.26 square miles on the Allegheny River, eighteen miles northeast of Pittsburgh. It was founded in 1891 on level ground the Burrell Improvement Company picked out for a city, and the grid it laid is still legible: numbered streets at right angles to avenues that run with the river. Arrival is typically 15 to 30 minutes.

Coverage Detail

What We Cover in New Kensington

Where we travel, what the property mix looks like, and what to tell us when you call.

New Kensington is unusually easy to navigate for a city its size, because the 1891 plan imposed order: numbered streets one way, avenues the other, with the avenues running parallel to the Allegheny. Tell us the street number and whether you are up the hill or down by the water, because the ground rises quickly away from the riverbank.

Typical Properties

Mostly early-20th-century housing built for the industrial workforce, on narrow lots along the numbered grid, with a commercial core and older apartment buildings mixed in. Door hardware is original through most of it: cylindrical knob sets and deadbolts from the 1920s to the 1950s, and heavier locksets on the commercial frontage. Hillside streets have steps up from the pavement.

Access & Dispatch Notes

Parking is on-street and generally workable, though the numbered streets are tight enough that a van may stop a door or two away. The complication is elevation: a riverfront address and one three blocks up the hill are a real climb apart. The city also uses two ZIP codes, 15068 and 15069, so give us the street as well as the number.

Frequently Asked Questions

New Kensington FAQs

Quick answers for New Kensington customers.

Why New Kensington rather than just Kensington?
Postal confusion. The Burrell Improvement Company named the new city Kensington in 1890, but that name collided with the Kensington neighbourhood in Philadelphia, so it was changed to New Kensington for the mail.
Who planned the street layout?
The Burrell Improvement Company. In 1890 it looked at the level land south of its base in Lower Burrell and judged it a good site for a city, then laid it out with numbered streets and avenues running parallel to the Allegheny, deliberately modelled on Pittsburgh.
What was here before the city?
A hunting ground for the Six Nations, then mid-1700s white settlement. Continental army troops built Fort Crawford near the mouth of Pucketa Creek in 1777 and abandoned it in 1793. The land was part of Burrell Township, later Lower Burrell, until the city was founded in 1891.
Where is New Kensington exactly?
In Westmoreland County on the Allegheny River, eighteen miles northeast of Pittsburgh, covering about 4.26 square miles at roughly 1,110 feet. It is part of the Pittsburgh metro and sits inside the Alle-Kiski valley run.
Why do doors stick on the hill streets?
Because the ground rises steeply off the river and the older frames have moved with it. A door that has dropped will not take a new deadbolt cleanly until the strike side is realigned, so we check the frame before touching the lock.
Which ZIP codes cover the city?
Two, 15068 and 15069. Because the city is only about four square miles they overlap tightly, so the street number is more useful to us than the code when we route the van.
Do you work on the downtown commercial frontage?
Yes — glass shopfronts, closers, and exit devices on the older commercial stock, priced after we have looked at the door and frame. The downtown blocks are original, so the hardware is heavier than on the residential streets.
