Coverage Detail

What We Cover in Coraopolis

Where we travel, what the property mix looks like, and what to tell us when you call.

Coraopolis has two things that change how we route: steep ground and brick streets. The borough sits between the Ohio River and the airport corridor, with a compact commercial main street at the bottom and residential blocks climbing above it. Tell us the street and roughly how high up you are.

Typical Properties

Large old houses on tight hillside lots, which is unusual for Allegheny County suburbia. The borough kept much of its 19th-century stock, and the topography preserved it: streets too steep to redevelop easily held on to their original buildings. Doors carry period cylinders and mortise cases, and the brick paving is original in places.

Access & Dispatch Notes

On-street parking, with grades that can stop a van short of the door. In winter the brick streets are slower than asphalt, so allow for it. The borough is also a commercial address in its own right: the American Bridge Company is headquartered here, so office and industrial suite work comes up alongside the residential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coraopolis FAQs

Quick answers for Coraopolis customers.

Why does Coraopolis have so many brick streets?
Because they were laid early and the steep topography made wholesale reconstruction unattractive. The borough still has numerous brick-paved streets and many large old houses as a result.
Was it always called Coraopolis?
No. It was the village of Middletown, with a post office called Vancefort established in August 1861. The name changed to Coraopolis in March 1886, and the borough was incorporated on 7 June 1886.
Where does the name come from?
Legend says it honours Cora Watson, a member of the Watson family born in 1870. A local historian later found an old newspaper suggesting it more likely came from a Greek word, so the popular story may not be the true one.
Who was the first settler?
Captain Robert Vance, a Virginian who settled near Andrew Montour’s land patent around 1773. Vance had served in the regiment George Washington commanded during the Braddock expedition, and he built a log stockade with a stone blockhouse, known as Vance Fort, for protection.
What happened to Middletown?
It grew into the borough. The name Middletown either described its position midway between Pittsburgh and Beaver, or came from an early settler named Alexander Middleton who ran a tavern in the area.
Why are the houses so large and old?
Because the borough was built before the car and never rebuilt after the steel era. Steep lots kept redevelopment expensive, so the 19th-century housing survived intact, which means period locks and doors that need servicing rather than swapping.
Do you work with the airport-corridor businesses?
Yes. Coraopolis sits east of Pittsburgh International Airport and holds corporate offices including the American Bridge Company headquarters, so suite keys, master charts, and access control are routine alongside the residential work.
