McKees Rocks sits on the south bank of the Ohio, 1.12 square miles of Allegheny County, and locals call it The Rocks. Coverage Detail

What We Cover in McKees Rocks

Where we travel, what the property mix looks like, and what to tell us when you call.

McKees Rocks is 1.12 square miles on the south bank of the Ohio, immediately west of Pittsburgh, and nearly all of it is built up. Chartiers Creek meets the river here, and the flat river ground known as the Bottoms carries the rail and industrial frontage. The residential blocks behind it are dense. Tell us the street and whether you are down in the Bottoms or up on the grid.

Typical Properties

Tightly packed older housing, much of it built for the iron and steel works and the railroad shops that dominated the borough. Doors carry original cylinders and knob sets, usually repainted many times, and multi-unit conversion is common, which means shared halls and more than one key per building. The commercial spine along Chartiers Avenue is older and heavier than the residential stock.

Access & Dispatch Notes

On-street parking on narrow blocks, with the van sometimes stopping a door or two away. The Bottoms is a different run from the residential grid, and the McKees Rocks Bridge carries traffic across to Pittsburgh over 7,293 feet, the longest span in Allegheny County. Give us the cross street and say which side of the creek you are on.

Frequently Asked Questions

McKees Rocks FAQs

Quick answers for McKees Rocks customers.

Why is it called The Rocks?
Locals shorten the name, but the origin is older than the nickname. Around 1749 the French-Canadian explorer Pierre Joseph Celoron de Blainville found a written rock here inscribed with markings he took to be Native American, and named the place after it.
Who was Alexander McKee?
A trader who also served as an Indian agent. He was given a 1,300-acre tract in 1764 for his services during the French and Indian War, and the name also referred to a rocky projection into the river at the site.
When was the borough founded?
1769 is treated as the founding date, because that is when the name McKees Rocks was placed on an official deed. It was not incorporated as a borough until 1892.
What was the Indian mound here?
One of the largest in the state, built by the Adena culture and later augmented by the Hopewell. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History excavated half of it in 1896 and unearthed the remains of 33 people. The bluff beneath it was afterwards quarried for municipal paving, which destroyed what was left.
Was Fort Pitt nearly built here?
It was considered. George Washington looked at this site as a possible location for Fort Pitt before ordering it built instead on the site of the destroyed French Fort Duquesne, now Point State Park in Pittsburgh.
How long is the McKees Rocks Bridge?
7,293 feet, which makes it the longest bridge in Allegheny County. It carries traffic between McKees Rocks and Pittsburgh and is the quickest way across the Ohio from the borough.
What industry was in the borough?
Iron and steel first, then large railroad machine shops and locomotive, freight, and passenger car manufacturing. Other plants made springs, enamel ware, lumber, plaster, nuts and bolts, chains and forgings, tin ware, concrete, and cigars. The Pittsburgh, Allegheny and McKees Rocks Railroad ran through the Bottoms.
