Sewickley is 1.12 square miles on the Ohio River, twelve miles north-west of Pittsburgh, with 3,907 people at the 2020 census. The name is probably Creek: sawi for raccoon and ukli for town, borrowed through the Asswikale branch of the Shawnee, though plenty of locals will tell you it means sweet water. The borough was incorporated on 6 July 1853, after the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway came through. Arrival is typically 15 to 30 minutes.

What We Cover in Sewickley

Where we travel, what the property mix looks like, and what to tell us when you call.

Sewickley is small and unusually well defined: 1.12 square miles with four land borders, Edgeworth to the north-west, Glen Osborne to the south-east, Sewickley Heights to the north-east, and Aleppo Township to the east, and the Ohio River on the other side. The Sewickley Bridge connects it to Moon Township. Tell us whether you are in the Village or up on the bluff.

Typical Properties

Two distinct stocks. The Village is a walkable business district of older storefronts; the bluffs above it hold large early-1900s houses on generous lots. Doors in the Village are heavier, with closers and exit devices, while the houses carry period cylinders and mortise cases that deserve servicing rather than swapping. The borough is about a tenth water, so the river edge is never far.

Access & Dispatch Notes

On-street parking in the Village, driveways up on the bluffs. The borough shares ZIP 15143 and a post office with most of its neighbours, including Sewickley Heights, Edgeworth, Glen Osborne, Bell Acres, Glenfield, Haysville, Leetsdale, Leet Township, and Sewickley Hills, so the postcode does not identify the municipality. The Quaker Valley School District serves all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sewickley FAQs

Quick answers for Sewickley customers.

What does Sewickley mean?
Probably raccoon town. The historian Charles A. Hanna derived it from the Creek words sawi for raccoon and ukli for town, borrowed through the Asswikale branch of the Shawnee. Some locals prefer sweet water, but Hanna’s etymology is the one the local historical society broadly follows.
When was the borough incorporated?
6 July 1853, under the simple name Sewickley. It had been formally established as Sewickleyville by 1840, and growth accelerated once the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway was built through the area.
Why did the town become a centre for education?
Because two schools arrived early. The Edgeworth Female Seminary moved from Pittsburgh to what was then Sewickley Bottom in 1837, and Sewickley Academy was founded the following year.
What happened to the ferries?
They ended in 1911, when the Sewickley Bridge was completed. Before that, flatboats, keelboats, and steamboats were the industry along this stretch of the Ohio, and a ferry carried people across to the far bank.
When was Ohio River Boulevard built?
1934, when it was completed and later designated part of Pennsylvania Route 65. It is still the main river road through the borough.
Which municipalities border Sewickley?
Four by land: Edgeworth to the north-west, Glen Osborne to the south-east, Sewickley Heights to the north-east, and Aleppo Township to the east. Across the river are Moon Township and Coraopolis, reached by the Sewickley Bridge.
Does the 15143 postcode mean Sewickley borough?
No. Most of the neighbouring municipalities share the Sewickley post office and the 15143 code, including Sewickley Heights, Edgeworth, Glen Osborne, Bell Acres, Glenfield, Haysville, Leetsdale, Leet Township, and Sewickley Hills. Give us the municipality as well as the street.
