Coverage Detail

What We Cover in Kittanning

Where we travel, what the property mix looks like, and what to tell us when you call.

Kittanning is small, 1.25 square miles, and shaped by the river. Everything sits on the east bank of the Allegheny, with the commercial core near the water and residential streets climbing away from it. The borough is also the county seat, so the centre carries more institutional traffic than a town of 3,900 would otherwise see. Tell us whether you are down by the bridge or up the hill.

Typical Properties

Older than most of the Mon Valley. The borough stands on the site of a Lenape village, and European settlement came largely after the Revolutionary War, so the housing runs from early-19th-century through the industrial build-out of the early 1900s. Doors carry original cylinders and period mortise cases, and the commercial stock is heavier, with closers and panic hardware.

Access & Dispatch Notes

On-street parking downtown and narrow grades on the side streets. Because the borough is on the river, the drop toward the water is short and steep in places. Worth knowing too: the playground on North Jefferson Street sits on the former Kittanning Cemetery, and 274 graves were moved to Troy Hill Road in 1960 to make that possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kittanning FAQs

Quick answers for Kittanning customers.

What does Kittanning mean?
It comes from Kithanink, which means on the main river in Lenape: kit for big, hane for mountain river, and the -ink suffix used in place names. The Lenape used the main river for the Allegheny and Ohio together, which they treated as one watercourse.
What happened at the Battle of Kittanning?
In 1756, during the French and Indian War, John Armstrong Sr. destroyed the Lenape village here. A blast from gunpowder stored in Captain Jacobs’s house was heard at Fort Duquesne, present-day Pittsburgh, forty-four miles away.
Why is Kittanning the county seat?
It was designated the seat when Armstrong County was organised. The borough sits at the western end of the Kittanning Path, the old Native American trail, which is what made it a natural centre in the first place.
What industry was here?
By the early 20th century the borough had iron and steel works, foundries, coal mines, glassworks, flour and lumber mills, china, pottery, brick, lime and clay works, mirror and typewriter factories, and breweries. Population peaked in 1930, before the Depression.
What is the Civil War connection?
The 103rd Regiment of Pennsylvania Infantry volunteers was organised at Kittanning between September 1861 and February 1862. It fought at the Siege of Yorktown in 1862 and at the Battle of Plymouth in 1864, where most of the regiment was captured.
What happened to the old cemetery?
The playground on North Jefferson Street was developed on the site of the historic Kittanning Cemetery. To allow that, 274 graves were moved in 1960 to a new cemetery along Troy Hill Road.
How does dispatch reach Kittanning?
Distance. Kittanning is thirty-six miles northeast of Pittsburgh, so we quote 15 to 30 minutes and hold it rather than promising something closer. Give us the cross street and whether you are near the bridge.
