Local Dispatch Profile: Donora, PA

Donora sits about twenty miles south of Pittsburgh on the Monongahela, a 2.05-square-mile borough built in terraces up from the river. It was incorporated in 1901 and named by merging the steel magnate William Donner’s surname with Nora Mellon’s first name. Our vans carry period mortise parts, because so much of the housing is Edwardian and the locks were never replaced. Expect us in 15 to 30 minutes.

Coverage Detail

What We Cover in Donora

Where we travel, what the property mix looks like, and what to tell us when you call.

Donora is 2.05 square miles and a single ZIP, 15033, but the grade matters more than the boundary. The borough steps up from the Monongahela through terraced streets, and an address alone will not tell us which terrace you are on. Give us the nearest cross street and whether you look down at the river or up at the hill.

Typical Properties

Edwardian and interwar housing, mostly frame and brick, built for the wire and steel works that made Donora the third wealthiest borough in the United States in 1911. Doors here are old enough to carry mortise cases and rim locks rather than modern deadbolts, and many are original. Retaining walls, exterior stairways, and side entries are normal, and the front door is often not the one in daily use.

Access & Dispatch Notes

Steep lots mean the van sometimes stops at the bottom of a flight of steps, so tell us how many you have and whether there is room to turn around. Pavement is narrow and parking is on-street. We keep period mortise bodies and cylinders aboard, because a 1920s lock that has been repainted will usually need freeing before it will take a new pin set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Donora FAQs

Quick answers for Donora customers.

Why is Donora called the Home of Champions?
Because of the athletes it produced, most famously the Baseball Hall of Fame outfielders Stan Musial and Ken Griffey Jr. The nickname is on the welcome signs, and it is the quickest way to confirm we are both talking about the same place.
How did the borough get its name?
It is a portmanteau. William Donner was a tin plate and steel magnate, and Nora Mellon (1878–1973) was the wife of the banker Andrew W. Mellon. The two names were merged when the borough was incorporated in 1901.
What happened during the 1948 smog?
A temperature inversion trapped industrial emissions over the valley. Twenty of the borough’s roughly 14,000 residents died and about 6,000 reported respiratory problems. It became a landmark event in American air-pollution law, and it is still the thing most people outside the valley know Donora for.
Where exactly is Donora on the river?
In the Mon Valley, about twenty miles south of Pittsburgh, five miles downriver from Charleroi and twenty-five miles upstream of Braddock. It sits in Washington County and uses ZIP 15033.
What industries built the town?
Agriculture first, then coal mining, steel-making, and wire-making. By 1911 that industrial base had made the borough the third wealthiest in the country. Most of the capacity left during the Rust Belt years, which is why the housing stock is old and largely unchanged.
Is there a Whiskey Rebellion connection?
Yes. In 1794 the Whiskey Insurrectionists held several meetings at Fells Church, about a mile from the present borough, before the federal response put the revolt down.
What kind of locks are on these houses?
Mortise cases and rim locks on most of the pre-war doors, usually repainted many times. We free and service the existing body rather than replacing it wherever we can, because a period lock that still works is worth keeping.
